Sea chests typically have screens or grates to prevent large debris, marine organisms, and other contaminants from entering the ship’s systems. This filtration process ensures that only clean seawater flows into the cooling system, minimizing the risk of blockages or damage. Sea chests often incorporate valves or adjustable openings to regulate the flow of seawater into the ship.
Regular maintenance and cleaning of sea chests are essential to ensure efficient operation. Over time, marine growth, sediment, and debris can accumulate, potentially reducing the flow of seawater and impairing cooling effectiveness. Proper cleaning and inspection help prevent such issues and extend the lifespan of the ship’s systems.
